220 SE rust repairs

This car looked OK at first glance ,but a quick look underneath revealed previous rust “repairs”. Repairs  is a word incorrectly used in this context though. Once I pulled the interior out it was obvious someone has simply welded loose parts of steel over the top of something…. That something was revealed once I used the plasma cutter to remove all the scrap that had been added.

Under the left front of the sill ,the fairly new paint is peeling off ,not a big problem as it’s all coming off.

The jack point is missing!.

The inner edge of the sill was revealed ,once the patch was removed . The ragged edge of the steel is actually rust .The jack point is also missing on this side . The car is lacking in strength now which must be rectified before the outside of the sills can be repaired. This will include a new floor .

Floor turned out to be two layers, one welded over the other !! all this had to removed. Pic shows the rotten section from the drivers side floor.

280SE engine build part 2

Today was spent assembling the piston and con rod assemblies, fitting the new rings after checking them in the bores to ensure the ring gasp is correct . Then fitting the crank followed by  fitting the crank seal . a little task which can up to an hour to get right so the crank doesn’t leak.

The block was repainted to an original type of black finish

With new side plates and fasteners the short block is beginning to look like an engine again.

220SE manual 001   To convert an automatic trans engine to a Manual requires a bit of work

Pictured on the left is the original 220SE flywheel with segmants removed to match the rotating balnce of the drive plate on the right. .A lot of material had to be removed . The reason the 250SE engine vibrated itself to death was because this simple job had not been carried out.

Weber DCOE rebuild

I’ve been restoring a 190SL for an owner and part of the task involves rebuilding it’s non standard DCOE carbs. A lot of W121’s were fitted with these over years to get around the problems thrown up by the awful Solex side draft carbs originally fitted.

Below is how the original fuel pipe looked before restoration .

Porsche 928 engine build

24/7/14

More progress on the Porkers V8 engine. A set of goetz rings have been supplied and fitted.

The heads and cam boxes have been bolted on. A new cam had to obtained for the left hand bank. The old cam had snapped off at the shoulder ,where strangely, there is a sharp edge . Theories about these cams snapping include thing like the cam wheel being loose or not torqued up enough don’t apply here because the wheel tight on the stub of the broken cam ,as was the retaining bolt.

over the last couple of days i have fitted the belt and covers, alternator and power steering pump. I’m just waiting for the rubber stands for the Kjet intake to arrive and the engine will be complete enough to go back into the car. Porsche 928 engine build 001

Wet blasting of alloy engine parts.

First developed in England in the 1940’s,this is a process where water and compressed air is used to clean delicate parts and restore the finish to an ‘as new’ surface. Also known as vapour blasting or slurry blasting  ,it is almost a green process as no caustic chemicals are required to remove dirt and oxidation .

Pictured are a pair of Porsche 928 cam boxes (yes i will work on any quality car!) . the lower is a ‘before ‘ example with burnt on oil and badly oxidised surface. The above it is an example of the finish achieved by just cleaning. next pic shows a 928 cylinder head as removed ,again very oxidised . Thwe 3rd picture shows the bare heads, all clean ready for valves ,springs seals etc to be fitted.

Feel free to call about your parts restoration and what i can offer.
