This cut out and replaced with a new part…

img_0101-3

The part is zinc coated to prevent rust occurring in the future .

The rusted parts were all removed and new steel welded in.

The drivers side outer sill has been fitted.

The Correct shape end caps are welded into place and the new steel painted with an etch primer.

IMG_0023

IMG_0024 (1)

Front cross member behind bumper has been replaced at sometime in the past but never welded to secure it in place ….Not a good idea as it is just floating there.

Drive shaft has new flex disc and trans has new shift rod bushes.

Mercedes 220SE Cabrio engine Rebuild assembly

IMG_0024

New Pistons installed ,side covers and sump fitted ,note: the deck has been machined to ensure it’s flat and true.

IMG_0026

Head is reassembled with all new Valves. The valve heads were pitted from corrosion and machining them would have made the valve head margins too thin.

IMG_0028

Cylinder head, water pump, and distributor drive fitted .Timing chain was replaced with a superior Iwis Chain, the one in the pic was just used to help install the new chain.

IMG_0016

Accessories added and nearly ready to install in the car.

Mercedes Benz 280SE 3.5 ute Engine swap.

The new engine and trans are installed with a new oil pan ,rear and front crank seals. New injectors with new intake manifold gaskets, timing chain and rails should see a nice reliable tow car for the owner 🙂 .New fuel hoses and clamps will connect the fuel system together .

Mercedes Benz 280SE 3.5 ute Engine swap .

Unfortunately the engine in the Moss green ute was damaged by who ever it was that did the soda blasting ( i hate that stuff….) .It looks as though the car was covered in the bicarb and then driven around their yard with the air cleaner off… or the air cleaner was clogged so they took it off and then proceeded to drive the car. Any how, the soda got into the engine and has ruined the rings and pistons . A combination which has destroyed any hope of compression and no compression equals no start. I stripped the m116 3.5 engine down and my worst fears were realised with massive bore wear IMG_0005IMG_0006IMG_0003IMG_0001

As usual the head studs were frozen in the heads and it was days work to remove the heads .The valve seats are pitted because of the biCarb soda .

After pricing the gaskets and rings etc the parts cost came close  to $6000 so after consulting the owner it was decided to fit a good 2nd hand engine . After a days hunting a M117 450SL engine was found and this is a Djet engine also so the engine bay will resemble a standard 280SE 3.5 .

IMG_0010 (2)

This has now been stripped and new seals fitted , the alloy parts have been wet blasted .The timing chain, sliding rails etc will be replaced and the injection system overhauled . The sump has been swapped from the SL short version to the 280SE 3.5 larger version .Water pump was replaced as it wasn’t known how long the engine was on the shelf.

The engine bay was pretty filthy so all of the dirt of 40 years was steam cleaned out in preparation for repair of the paint before the new engine goes in.

300SE W112 rust repair .

After Christmas 2016 and I’m slowly catching up with all of the work in the shop, first up is further rust repair on the W112  300SE lang. under the booster it had rusted, not badly ,just ugly …

IMG_0085.JPGYears of spilled brake fluid has burnt off the paint ,leaving the steel bare and open to rust.

The rusted parts have been removed and inside the crossmember cleaned and rust treat .

IMG_0083

New top piece has been cut out of Zinanneal 1mm  to match the existing panel,

IMG_0084

because of the complex shapes ,the replacements have to made in cardboard first to get all the shapes organised first.

300 SEL 6.3 up and running

A short video showing the 6.3 up and running to check it’as C/O level at hot idle .

Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 ute conversion.

IMG_0331 IMG_0332

In these  pictures of the distributor, the inside is full of the damned bicarb which was used to strip the older paint of the cars body before painting.

The distributor will be stripped and overhauled because the bicarb will affect the fuel injection trigger points which are in the lower part of the distributor.

IMG_0333

IMG_0334In this picture it can be seen that the bicarb has infiltrated the igniton wiring.

300SEL 6.3 progress…

IMG_0313

The engine is now together and just needs tuning , after the heads were checked an the tappets adjusted.

IMG_0314The shroud was derusted ,then painted with POR15 gloss black .

IMG_0321

Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3 cylinder Head swap.

IMG_0253A new fuel line has been fitted using the original brackets etc which were in good condition after 40 years…!

IMG_0254 WIMG_0255 IMG_0256

The engine bay needed a clean and after a wash it was revealed to have a few places where the paint had disappeared  because of engine heat . IMG_0261

With the heads off ,a few little things became apparent such as this feed wire for one of the thermal time Switches. A couple of the firewall grommets needed replacing .Missing grommets allow noise, fumes etc into the cabin .

IMG_0263

The Steering box was leaking through that round part on the top part of the

Steering box . A new seal had to made for this and the two copper washers were missing. the cover nut and lock nut were both loose. The oil return pipe on the steering box has also been damaged in the past when some one bent it.

IMG_0264

IMG_0271With the heads off and the engine due for a repaint ,the booster was removed and rust removed . it was then etch primed and primed. The other objects in the picture belong to the 280SE 3.5 ute project..

The car was completely masked up and the engine bay resprayed in the black satin as before.

BUT before the black could be applied and the engine bay was still in primer one or two other jobs need doing.

IMG_0275 IMG_0276

IMG_0278IMG_0280

The firewall brace on the left hand side was cracked almost right around and had to be welded up.

With the engine bay now painted the heads were fitted ,along with newly plated relay brackets . There is a lot less wiring now the original loom has been cleaned up and things such as a mobile phone loom removed .
