Porsche 928 engine build

24/7/14

More progress on the Porkers V8 engine. A set of goetz rings have been supplied and fitted.

The heads and cam boxes have been bolted on. A new cam had to obtained for the left hand bank. The old cam had snapped off at the shoulder ,where strangely, there is a sharp edge . Theories about these cams snapping include thing like the cam wheel being loose or not torqued up enough don’t apply here because the wheel tight on the stub of the broken cam ,as was the retaining bolt.

over the last couple of days i have fitted the belt and covers, alternator and power steering pump. I’m just waiting for the rubber stands for the Kjet intake to arrive and the engine will be complete enough to go back into the car. Porsche 928 engine build 001

Rust and Decay..W107 450SLC Mercedes

today has been a funny one, A mate phoned me this morning to ask if I wanted a pair of 107’s .’well not really ” …I thought. but they are here now after our other mate,Neil ,dropped them off.  The funny part though is how my mate found them. He was looking at houses being advertised for auction on a web site and spotted these two relics parked in the front yard of onwe of the houses. He contacted the seller and id a deal because he wants the spot lamps and headlight washers on the red one .

The Poor old 107 is famous rustbucket and these are no exception

Lathe

Today I finally got this monster running and it is brilliant!! . it’s a romanian built Lathe with a 2 meter long bed and a 400 mm swing although it will take 600 mm if the bed gap is opened. It has 64 different gears with a fully powered Apron, with forward and reverse .

It weighs 3tonnes and has a 7.5 Kw main motor with a 3 Kw rapid  advance motor for the Apron power feed. It seems to run very quietly too for a machine made in 1968 . i bought it because it was cheap but it has taken a bit of work to get it running including a new main motor and contactor etc. This initial cost has been off set by the fact it came with some beautiful Lemora tooling ,made in italy with a quick change tool post and a few hundred dollars worth of drills and other cutter tip, tool holders etc.I think the massive elliot 4 jaw chuck was worth more than what i have spent on it.

Porsche 928 S

OK,It’s almost a mercedes, it has a Mercedes three speed automatic and the engine fan carried a W108 part number….

Recently purchased by a new owner ,I was asked to do a pre purchase inspection. The car looked OK but the seller had problems getting it to fire… 10 years off the road is not good for any car.

it was delivered here so i could take a look at the4 engine and get it ready for the owner so he could drive it to Sydney.  I got the engine running but there was terrible knock from number 2 cylinder and several cylinders were misfiring. A leak down test revealed at least three intake valves were leaking badly. So off came the heads…to reveal a badly damaged bore in #2 . The ringas must have been stuxck to the cylinder walls ansd whwen the PO tried to start the long dormant car,the rings grabbed breaking some of them and then breaking the piston.

Up date: a new engine has been sourced from local 928 tuner,John Gill and this is undergoing a re ring and reseal prior to fitting to the car,

ist picture shows the replacement engine as it arrived here, it was full of oil, really full so i had to tip it over and pour it out of the cylinders. It had been oiled up to preserve it.

3rd pic shows a lot of the blackness inside .

4th pic,heads removed .Bore is OK .

5th,the pistons and rods are removed to reveal perfect bearings and crank

6th pic,not so good in cam department though. I loosened the timing belt ,then undid the cam gear retaining bolts. the left hand cam wheel fell off when i undid the bolt.

There are a few theories regarding the reason for this, but my own is that the edge of the step ,where cam wheel butts up to cam has a sharp corner , which is a stress point that creates cracks  ,and that is where the cam has broken off.

7th pic is of the only dodgy piston, number 5 where the rings were stuck in the grooves.  The rest of the pics show the heads reassembled and the Kjet intake manifolds wet blasted to restore the original look.

1958 Mercedes 220S Ponton (or roundie ,if you live in Australia)

recently purchased by a new owner, this is a very unusual ponton, because of it’s lime green colour . Imagine this car in 1958! I remember first seeing lime green on cars in the late 1960’s and even then it was “out there” !.

So what has to be done to this car?

The seller gave me a comprehensive list of things to be done apart from the normal service ,jobs such as replacing valve guide seals and sorting out a wiring fault to the spot lamps. First job though was to investigate the locked right rear brake. Normally a symptom of leaking brake cylinders ( the linings soak up the brake fluid making them stick to the drums)

Well both wheel cylinders were sick, one was rusted solid and the other was leaking badly. But the most concerning thing was the dodgy self adjusters which had been filled with washers.See picture 4 .  All parts are available for these fantastic cars so it is simply a matter of getting the linings fitted with new bonded linings ,which are radiused to suit the drums and the wheel cylinders reconditioned.

New hoses have been fitted and the self adjusters fitted with new friction discs and thrust washers…no more old galvanised washers from someones magic used bolt bucket.

The 5th picture shows the nipple where the front bush of the rear torque arms mount to the body. As can be seen these are in very good condition. often, these rusted right off the chassis even when the cars were still fairly new. Mercedes sold replacement kits to fix this.

Picture 6 shows the condition of the torque arm bushes ansd the left rear shock absorber which had broken off, all have been replaced with new parts.

Picture 7 is of the brass screen in the oil filter housing. A bit of typical mercedes overengineering where the paper filter element is surrounded by a metal screen to catch bigger bits of dirt..

This car is also equipped with a hydrak automatic clutch.. basically a vacuum controlled clutch with a fluid coupler . The gear lever controls a valve electrically which uses vacuum to work the clutch via a vacuum diaphragm canister.

Torque arms, spring plates and various fasteners and washers have been restored awaiting refitting.

Wet blasting of alloy engine parts.

First developed in England in the 1940’s,this is a process where water and compressed air is used to clean delicate parts and restore the finish to an ‘as new’ surface. Also known as vapour blasting or slurry blasting  ,it is almost a green process as no caustic chemicals are required to remove dirt and oxidation .

Pictured are a pair of Porsche 928 cam boxes (yes i will work on any quality car!) . the lower is a ‘before ‘ example with burnt on oil and badly oxidised surface. The above it is an example of the finish achieved by just cleaning. next pic shows a 928 cylinder head as removed ,again very oxidised . Thwe 3rd picture shows the bare heads, all clean ready for valves ,springs seals etc to be fitted.

Feel free to call about your parts restoration and what i can offer.
